Ages 7-8 Instructional League
This level is for 7 and 8 year olds. Emphasis is placed upon the basics of play (hitting, throwing and fielding) and safety during the game. Games are coach pitch, use a ten batter rule, and are timed (2 hours). The girls will play a different position during each inning, thus experiencing all elements of the field. By the end of the season, basic rules of the game are followed. Play is against teams from
New Hope –Solebury and Tri-Township. Home games are held at the
Lookout
Park fields on
River Road.
Ages 9-10 UM Softball “Minors”
This level of UM Softball is a transitional level from instructional, where the coaches pitch, to the “Major” levels, where formal rules of play are in place. At U-10, the pitching is primarily performed by the girls (under limited conditions, coaches assume the pitching role during a given inning). In addition, the games double in length from instructional to 6 innings or two hours, umpires are utilized, and innings end after three outs (strikeouts or putouts) rather than after all girls have batted. There is no sliding, stealing or advancing a base on overthrows at U-10, as the ball is dead after a play is completed, rather than when the ball is returned to the pitcher. Scores are kept at the U-10 level, and won-lost records are maintained for all teams. UM typically fields two teams that play against teams from our surrounding area, such as New Hope-Solebury, Tri-Township and
Newtown. In addition, we will host a U-10 tournament this season and possibly participate in another tournament. One tournament will include all teams from the U-10 league, and the other will likely be undertaken with an all-star team from the UM league (Alan?). Girls will be selected for that team based on recommendations from the managers and coaches at the U-10 level.
Ages 11-12 UM Softball “Majors”
This level of UM Softball steps up considerably to all-girl pitching from a 40-foot mound and using a 12-inch ball. Stealing is allowed when the pitch crosses home plate, and the ball remains “live” until returned to the pitcher. The two UM Softball teams play in an area-wide league with teams from Newtown, Warminster, Upper Southampton,
New Hope and Tri-Township. Home games are held at the
Lookout
Park fields on
River Road. Mid-season and end-of-season league tournaments are well attended and highly competitive. In addition, tryouts will be held mid-season for a travel team that will participate in two or three regional tournaments after the regular season ends. Girls will be chosen for the travel team based on ability, positional need and a commitment to participation.
Ages 13-14 UM Softball “Senior”
This level is for girls who enjoy a spirited game of softball played with sportsmanship, respect for their teammates, opponents, coaches, and game officials. An encouraging and fun environment enables each athlete to develop, improve and maximize her individual and team skills as well as build friendships. Skills are taught by coaching staff and, occasionally, visiting High School and/or collegiate players. We encourage and applaud all accomplishments and contributions and, at the same time, keep competitiveness and ambition in perspective. Through this energetic environment, we strive to provide a positive experience and hope to impart some life-long skills.
Our league encompasses teams from Newtown, Warminster, Upper Southampton,
New Hope and Tri-Township communities. Practices are typically held 2x-3x weekly, and subside once the season has opened. Home games are at
Lookout
Park fields on
River Road. We play a mid-season and end-of-season league tournament, in addition to sending 2-3 athletes to represent us at the end of season All-Star game.
